Does Window Film Provide Energy Saving Benefits?
You know all the regular tricks of energy saving. You make sure your windows are caulked and that there are no leaks in the seal. But did you know that your windows are still permeable no matter how pristine they are? That’s where window films come in. They are one of the most cost effective ways to keep your home warmer in the winter, and since your heating is likely your biggest culprit of energy usage in your home, they are definitely worth the investment.
What is a window film?
Just like the car tinting on your windows, a window film is a sheet of clear polyester with a slight tinting agent on it. Once it is applied, it allows the visible light in, but prevents the infrared light from entering. Because it adds an extra layer of protection to your windows, it also keeps the warm air in your home during the cold winter months.
Are all window films the same?
No, they are not. There are actually several different types out there, each with varying levels of blockage. However, not all of them are suitable for every space. For example, highly-reflective window films may work well, but they dramatically impact visibility, which makes them not very practical for home usage. The same goes for standard tinted window films. However, the new Low-E window films provide maximum visibility while still being extremely effective.
Do I need them on all of my windows?
No, you really only need them on the windows that get direct sunlight, so the eastern and western-facing ones. That being said, if your main goal is to keep the heat in your home during the winter, the films will definitely not hurt anything and can have a substantial benefit on your energy saving.
Can I install them myself?
Can you? Yes. Should you? Probably not. Have you ever seen a car where the person tried to tint the windows themselves? It never turns out quite right. The same goes for the installation of window films. A professional has the know-how and expertise to install each window film with the precision needed to give you a flawless finished look.
