Is Window Film for You? Part 2
Managing your home or business’s solar gain can be a serious challenge. Not only does sunlight fade and rot carpet and furniture, it can have a big impact on your cooling costs. At Arjay’s, we have many different solutions for harmful solar gain. You can cover the windows with heavy drapes, install special screens, and beyond. One of our favorite solutions is window film. However, it is one of the lesser-known solutions, especially when it comes to residential windows.
In our last blog, we answered some common questions about window film in order to clarify what a phenomenal solution it can be. Today, we are finishing up with a few last questions!
Will Window Film Harm My Plants?
- If you have a green thumb and you cultivate plants inside, we understand that you might worry they won’t get the sun they need when window film is installed. Go ahead and move the plants you’re worried about to an area with less sunlight. Leave them there for a few days and see what happens. You might be surprised. Many people find that window film creates the optimal environment for their plants by reducing UV light by just enough to keep the plants from getting burned. We have significant experience with plants and window film, and we would love to help you figure out what will work best.
What Will Happen During Winter?
- When the air temperatures go down, many homes benefit from solar gain. The sun that comes through windows is especially effective when it comes to heating up a room. Window film reduces the solar gain. Won’t that make your home cooler, requiring your heating system to work harder?
- The key is to remember that heat travels both ways through glass. The sun may project warmth through windows, but windows are some of the worst heat sinks in a home, letting tons of heat out of the structure. We insulate walls and roofs, but windows are more difficult, because we want to see through them! Heavy, insular curtains can work, but they can also block the sun from working for you. Window film is the perfect halfway point. It keeps heat in while still allowing some sun through to heat the air. Basically, window film turns a single pane window into a double-pane window, and so forth.
Is the Film Permanent?
- Nope! Window film can definitely be removed. However, we use chemical bonding to make sure it doesn’t start peeling off. This means that removal does take some effort. It is absolutely possible, though.
Does Film Peel, Crack, Discolor, or Bubble?
- It never should. If it does, installation was done incorrectly or the film itself is faulty. Our films come with warranties, so in the very rare chance that your window film acts up, we will replace it for you.
